You may think you know Vogue.
You may think you know who they are and what they do. You may think of the institution and hold preconceived ideas about the types of people who attend Vogue College of Fashion. A friend of mine did.
The widespread stereotypes of elitism and exclusivity precede the college, and following my experience of their 5 Days of Creative Direction course, I feel it is my duty to dispel that myth — here and now.
Truthfully, I had my own reasons for taking this course, some of which may be too personal to articulate. I entered this experience as a 30-year-old neurodivergent woman who had been away from the classroom for some time — and I was completely amazed by the people I encountered.
As someone with both autism and ADHD, I often struggle to express my feelings to those around me in real time. In new environments, particularly those involving large groups, sensory overwhelm and masking can make it difficult for me to fully process my connections with others as they are happening. I fear that this sensory load may have limited my ability to express to both my classmates and lecturers just how deeply this shared experience affected me — and the indelible mark they have all left on me.
So I have decided to write them a letter.
To My Classmates
Thank you.
Thank you for your profound impact on me in such a short space of time. I cannot begin to express the appreciation and affection I hold for each of you, and for the time we shared together.
Thank you for your openness, for your stories, for travelling great distances, for making radical changes — regardless of your stage in life — and for bringing your unique, colourful experiences and expressions into the room.
I want to honour you and your creativity. You are some of the most brave, intelligent, and exceptionally talented people I have ever encountered. Your diverse backgrounds are reflected so beautifully in your work, and it has been a deep and meaningful honour to meet each and every one of you.
Whether you travelled across the world, pivoted after a long-established career, or made a bold leap into the unknown, please continue to inspire on your journeys ahead. You have all inspired me — and I will carry you, and this experience, with me for the rest of my life.
With love,
Jehneva
